Warming up before skiing may seem like a trivial matter, but it can really make you feel more comfortable when skiing. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced skier, some simple movements before skiing can make your body more flexible and reduce discomfort and injury during skiing.
Why warm up?
Skiing is a high-energy sport, and especially in cold conditions, muscles tend to become stiff. If you start skiing without stretching beforehand, your body may not be able to adapt, leading to strains or other discomfort. Therefore, it is worth spending a few minutes warming up.
Warming up helps your body relax and activates your muscles, and it can also make you feel more energetic and relaxed on the slopes.
What are the warm-up exercises?
These warm-up exercises are easy to learn, even for beginners:
1. Arm circles & leg swings
First, stand up straight with your legs shoulder-width apart and start doing arm circles. You can start with small circles and then move on to larger circles, doing a few circles clockwise and counterclockwise. Next, switch to leg swings, swinging each leg forward and backward. The bigger the movement, the more muscles you will activate, especially those in your legs and shoulders.
2. Trunk rotation
Stand up straight, put your hands on your hips, and slowly begin to rotate your torso. You can turn to the left first, then to the right, and do a few turns in each direction. This movement will activate your waist and abdomen, keeping them stable while skiing.
3. Squat
Squats help loosen up the thigh and buttocks muscles. Stand up straight with your legs shoulder-width apart and slowly squat down, keeping your knees parallel to your toes. After doing a few squats, you will feel a slight warmth in your legs, which is a sign that your body is starting to get active.
4. Standing still
Marching in place is a great lower body warm-up exercise. Lift your knees as high as you can, ideally until they are parallel to the ground, and keep marching in place for 20 to 30 seconds. This movement will help you activate your leg muscles and prepare your body for the challenges of skiing.
5. Jumping jacks
Jumping jacks are a great way to get your heart rate up. Stand with your legs together and your arms hanging naturally at your sides. Jump up with your feet apart and your arms raised above your head. This action can relax your muscles all over your body and quickly prepare you for skiing.
Warming up doesn’t stop there
If you are skiing with your kids, you can use some fun ways to warm up, such as playing snowball fights, chasing games, etc. This will not only exercise your body, but also add some fun to skiing.
These warm-up exercises don’t take a few minutes, but the effect is obvious. A few minutes before skiing will make your body more relaxed and flexible, which can not only improve your skiing performance, but also reduce accidental injuries. Everyone can easily do these warm-up exercises, whether they are novice skiers or experienced skiers, they can all benefit from them.
